Can anyone on the ibex hunt...

I've seen javelina everywhere in the Floridas. They are in all the draws that have water. They are a little harder to glass in the Floridas than the areas where I hunt them because they seem to hang out in thicker, brushier areas. Look for tracks and concentrate on those areas. When you do...

    NM Bugle Report

I hiked into the Pecos on Thursday. In the afternoon when I hit about 11,000 feet, I started running into elk and hearing bugles. I heard them and saw them Thursday evening and Friday morning, until I headed back down at about 1:30 Friday afternoon. Lots of elk, and tracks, but all up high.

    Unit 25/26

I haven't hunted this area in many years, but I remember seeing some really big bucks in the aspen trees, not far from the roads in Unit 25. I was backpacking in to get away from the roads to get back to where the animals would be, but it turns out, the big deer I saw were all within a mile or...

    Sheep and goat

Trophyhunter - What unit did you draw? Someone drew the unit that I usually apply for this year with 6 weighted points. If you PM me, and it's the same unit, I could fill you in on what I know; I've been keeping track of it for the last few years. -- Bob

    Lion success

Here in New Mexico, we eat lion regularly. It is very similar to pork. Try it in a green chile stew (chile verde) with Hatch green chile and potatoes.

    Wyoming credit card fees

I remember answering the surveys last year or the year before about credit card fees. I think I got a survey for every license I held that year, or every harvest survey or something. I think I got to answer the survey at least 3 times. I chose "pay the credit card fees", because the other...

Help chooing a unit for muleys in NM

I hunt several states. I'm a NM resident so I hunt deer here nearly every year. I don't know that I would hunt here as a non-res. Since you now have to buy a Game-hunting License ($65 Non-res) to apply, and as a non-res you are limited to 6% of the licenses, I think you are probably wasting...

    Open Country Glassing Setup?

Here's what you need if you are serious: Docter Optic 40x80mm ED Super Wide Angle Binocular with backpack (You can find them on Ebay. With a good carbon fiber tripod, they will run you about $5,000, twice the cost of a "good" Swaro spotter.) I have used them and --- They are truly amazing!

    Hunting

I've read this thread twice and I must be missing the point. I guess the consensus is that most of you want quality instead of opportunity??? (And I guess you resent land owners getting tags?) I personally love the way the NM system works. I like the opportunity to bring meat home, and do so...

    Antelope doe tags?

Probably . . . . The leftover drawing results are supposed to post on Thursday, 12 July, and there are likely to be tags left over for sale "over the counter". They will likely be for areas that don't have any public access. They are some of the areas that have the asterisk "difficult public...

    Super Tag Results !!!

I checked my Montana Super Tag results today. I bought a couple tickets and they all showed up as unsuccessful. However, one number showed up in red and was designated as my "closest" draw. I guess that means I better buy more tickets next year ???

    53-1 Antelope

Lots of antelope, very easy hunt. I've hunted there many times and when we hunted it 2 years ago I wished I had brought my bow. You could easily stalk to inside of 50 yards. Didn't see any big bucks, but plenty that were decent. It is typical, mostly-dry, high desert type landscape. The unit...

    Progressive Hippies

Yes, I considered changing my registration to Democrat so I could vote against the losers. However, there were too many losers and I would only get to vote against one in each office. So, I didn't change. But I'll get to vote against them in the General Election.

    F*** The NRA!

Yes, Pat Davis is a moron who thinks any publicity will help his campaign. He is an embarrassment to New Mexico and should drop out and go away.

    Yeti distances themselves from NRA

I agree with Sierra in post #3 above. RTIC coolers. Similar (OR BETTER) quality, lower prices and not anti. About half the price when I bought my RTIC IIRC.

    Application Change Question

I went on the site and changed one of my applications today. You just go to the tab where you pull up your list of applications and on the right side of the screen it says something like "make changes" in a blue box. Click the box, and it looks like you can anything. I changed a second choice...

I heard this was a "hand-picked" liberal judge so the Feds thought they could get away with anything. I also heard that it was actually one of those "get your cows off this federally owned land, because we think there might be some endangered tortoises out there somewhere (that were never...

Trophy Mountain Outfitters wilderness elk hunt

I've hunted with Dustin and James Barnes and they are great. I highly recommend them. It was a few years ago, I think I was in unit 92. Great camp and great hunt. I plan to go back and hunt with them sometime in the next year or two or three. Some of the most beautiful country I've ever hunted.

    Anyone get a call yet?

Yes, it was a NR sheep tag, so I don't know if they are calling elk or deer hunters yet. The CPW person said they are still validating the re-issue system, so it could be a few weeks before the tag shows up, but they received the check and I was assured that the tag is mine. She said the...

    USFS help

LAST EDITED ON Jun-07-17 AT 09:10PM (MST)[p]I went through a situation that was similar a few years ago. I believed or was led to believe that I had everything worked out on multiple occasions, but the Forest Service never came through.

    ATV Question

Here's what I think is the big issue. The side-by-side ATVs are called UTVs. In Colorado, there are many Forest Service roads where you cannot drive a vehicle unless it has a State License Plate (Highway Legal), not an ATV license or sticker. UTVs cannot get a state license plate so they...

How do you guys choose an outfitter

The advise above is right on. Don't assume that if you pay more, you are some how getting something that is better. Also, don't assume everyone harvests the size animals that are on their website. The best outfitted hunts I've had have been with small operations that are in it to provide a...

HELP - drew a rifle elk tag for 16B

I would recommend Gary Webb also. I've hunted with him and did very well. He's also reasonable on his prices. It was a very enjoyable hunt. Gary and his wife Julie run a great operation. http://www.garywebbguide.com/ Good Luck, that's a great tag.

    Rifle weights

The weight on a Sako A7 depends on exactly what model you have. I have an "A7 Synthetic" 300 wsm that was spec'ed at 6 lbs 6 oz. It weighed exactly that. With a Swarovski 3.5-18x44 scope (15.9 oz) and rings and muzzle break, it weighs 7 lbs 7 oz. With my sling, it weighs 7 lbs 13 oz. Loaded...

    Bobcats, Foxes and Lions

I saw two kit foxes down in Unit 30 a couple weeks ago. I hadn't seen a kit in years, then I saw two in two days. They are pretty easy to call in if they are around. They like the grassy areas from what I've seen.

    Lightweight scope advice needed

I had a Zeiss on my lightweight 300wsm sheep rifle. It did not have a zero stop which I found out can be a major problem when you pull it out of a rifle scabbard and have no idea which direction to turn the turret to get back to zero. I replaced the Zeiss with a Swarovski Z5 3-18 with a...

    Bino Harness

I also have had a bunch of the others, but now I use the Kuiu and it is by far, MY FAVORITE. It mostly stays right where I want it to be, and doesn't bounce around. It is much better if you ever hunt on a horse IMO. I always hated getting my binoculars pounded on a saddle horn.

    Barbary for Bighorn in 34????

There are Barbary's on White Sands already (there has been for years). I remember reading some of the reports from the mountain lion study many years ago where they talked about killing Barbary's while trapping lions. I saw a couple Barbary's out by Mockingbird Gap about 20 years ago while...

Brett Thoft - Full Curl Aviation

Sad news. There are probably people here on MM that knew Brett Thoft of Full Curl Aviation in Wasilla. Brett died in a plane crash in Montana on Tuesday afternoon. He was a truly great guy, and a great Air Taxi operator in the Brooks Range. Brett was 33 years old and had a wife and two small...
