    First archery elk hunt

LAST EDITED ON Oct-07-11 AT 12:02PM (MST)[p]I archery hunted western Montana a couple of weeks ago and if I can get P&Y to open a category for 4x4 elk only I think I may have the world record. We were hunting about 12 miles in the wilderness and killed this bull about 1 mile from camp I'm...

    Idaho Wilderness Company

Do any of you have a review of Idaho Wilderness Company? I'm thinking about doing one of their mule deer hunts. I'm wondering if the quality of the deer and hunt are as good as I'm being led to believe. Is there a legitimate chance of seeing 180"+ bucks?

    Bitterroot Unit changes?

I know this is a vague question, but have any of the units around the Bitterroots just been converted to limited draw areas for 2011?

    Got my deer back today!

I picked up my deer and my stepdads deer today from Rapalee Taxidermy. Todd did an amazing job, but it's hard to tell with the crappy cell phone pics:

    Virginia Elk reintroduction plan

This won't mean much to most of you, but there has been alot of hard work by the RMEF and volunteers to make this happen: http://www.roanoke.com/news/breaking/wb/257202

    Pelican 1700 and Z7

Does anyone know if the Z7 will fit in a Pelican 1700 case? I'm picking up my new Z7 tonight and I'm struggling to find a case that comes under the 62 linear inch rule the airlines have. Any other suggestions would be helpful too. Thanks Ben

Help picking gear for Montana Archery hunt

I'm going on an archery hunt next year either the last week of September or the first week in October in the Bitterroots. I think I really need to upgrade my insulating and possibly outer layers. I'll probably be wearing REI MTS base layers since they have done so well for me to the last two...

    Hanwag Cheyenne GTX Boot

I'm seriously considering buying a pair of the Hanwag Cheyenne GTX Boot after reading Wade's review. What I'm looking for is a boot that is lighter and "stealthier" than my Kenetrek Hardscrabble Hikers for archery season. I still want the boot to hold up when I'm hopefully packing the new world...

Whitehall taxidermist case (Big Horn killed by Warden in Montana)

Looks like the ram that was killed wasn't enough to convict the guy of any wrongdoing: http://www.missoulian.com/news/local/article_f3b20f64-3791-11df-aca9-001cc4c002e0.html

    Asolo Moran GTX Hiking Boot

I was looking for some early season lightweight boots that would have a softer sole than my Kenetrek and came across the Asolo Moran GTX Hiking Boot. Anyone have any experience with these? Thanks Ben

    What's a Matthews MQ1 worth?

I've got a Matthews MQ1 I've had for about 11 years and I'm thinking about upgrading to a Hoyt Maxxis or Matthews Z7. My MQ1 has a new Winners Choice string, almost new Matthews fall away rest, and currently has a Sword Acusite Trident Hunter site. The site may or may not stay with it. Any ideas...

    Hunting Show Question

First off please don't turn this into another "The Expo is rigged" thread. My wife and I have talked about going to one of the big hunting shows like the SCI convention, Elk camp, or the WH&C Expo/Full Curl Social. The number of hunts that are raffled at the Expo and Full Curl Social is...

    My stepdad's 2009 muley

My stepdad hunted with me in New Mexico last year and shot at a buck he swore was hit. We searched for 2 hours and couldn't find any blood or hair much less the deer. A couple of guys trying to tag some cows during the late season stumbled on the deer. He had gone about 500 yards and bedded down...

    Compass West Outfitters

I was just doing some research on New Mexico outfitters and came across Compass West Outfitters. I know they've posted some trophy photos on here, but do any of you have any personal experience with them? I'm looking at the private land elk hunts in SE New Mexico in particular.

    First Bull

I mentioned in my mule deer thread I had taken an elk as well so here are some pictures of that bull. This is my first elk and even though he isn't a 400" bull I'm still very happy with him. This was my first antlered animal period. I've hunted whitetail deer for 19 years and between extremely...

    First Mule Deer

I passed on some smaller 4x4's during this hunt and on the next to last morning I was beginning to question myself. It was foggy this morning then all of the sudden the fog lifted and this huge buck was standing 350 yards away. He had no idea we were there and walked in behind some cypress...

Taxidermy for Elk and Mule Deer

I'm trying to plan out all my expenses for my trip to NM this year and decided I better look into taxidermy costs in case I get lucky. I've talked to one taxidermist in NM that charges $1,400 for shoulder mount closed mouth elk, $1,600 shoulder mount bugle, and $775 for mule deer shoulder mount...

    Packable Rain Parka/Jacket

LAST EDITED ON Mar-17-09 AT 07:57AM (MST)[p]I have a pair of Cabela's Rain Suede packable bibs that I just bought out of the Bargain Bin and was looking for a similar packable Parka or jacket. I hate to pay the full price for the Rain Suede and was seeing if you guys might have some alternatives...

    Lowa Creek II GTX

Yet another boot question. I currently have Kenetrek Hardscrabble Hikers and love them. My problem is I'd like to have an insulated pair as well, but Kenetrek currently doesn't offer that. I've looked at Hanwag, Lowa, and others trying to find a good lightweight insulated hiker type boot. I...

    Texas deer hunt

I've been thinking about going to Texas this year on a deer hunt and have been looking at a few guided hunts. So far I've looked seriously at Vinson Ranches and Jason Stillwell's Adventure Outdoors. So far they haven't been very prompt getting back to me. Does anyone have any experience with...

Splitting meat in a hunting party

I'm going on my first elk hunt in a couple of weeks and have a question about the accepted protocol for sharing meat with the rest of your hunting group. There are 5 of us going and 4 of us have cow tags while the 5th guy missed out on a muley tag. If we kill 1 or 2 elk what's the general rule...

    New Mexico Elk Guides

I am planning on beginning a yearly ritual of applying for a New Mexico Bull tag and being disappointed when I'm not drawn :-). I really don't have the money or a wife with enough tolerance for me to lay down $8-10k for a private land hunt, but I can swing a guided "once in a lifetime" hunt on...
