Any successful youth hunters in the Sandias this year? I watched one youngster walk right past 2 bucks last weekend, and another one attempt to get close to two bucks only to get busted! Heard of a few get hit but never recovered. I have the hunt in January so hopefully they saved me one!!!

Like others have said...you can pretty much drive down any road in 16A, park, walk in the woods a half mile and you should be seeing elk. Maybe not giant bulls around every tree, but they are in there and definitely take some work to find. What are your expectations for the hunt? Are you...

Its definitely worth having a tag!! Water is probably your best bet without dogs.....although 2 years ago we could have killed 8 different bears in 7 days of our elk hunt with our bows just walking around on our elk hunt.

The rut is something that is totally dependent on area and when the cows go into estrus. Like stated above, generally (this term is used very loosely) you can usually count on the bulls being pretty active in late September and into early October. Bugles will definitely be heard in early Sept...

I don't know about B since it is mostly wilderness, but I noticed a huge difference in A! Where we camped and hunted during the 3 hunt season, there was usually only 1 or 2 other camps, last year there was 8! This was during the first hunt, and it thinned out a little near the end of the hunt...

Elk here too!! I always look forward to spending time in Gods country with my dad and uncle, smoking a big bull is icing on the cake if it happens!!

I don't necessarily have a "best" year, but I gotta say I have been blessed!! I have been drawn for both elk and deer for the past 22 years straight! The past 5 years have really been great since we have hunted the Gila every year and have taken some big animals! Hoping for year 6 this year!!
