Ate my Rifle Deer Tag in 34

Unit 34 is a great unit for tag soup. But I do love to hunt there. We've been four years not hitting that tag but we always go to Cloudcroft for predator hunting if we don't draw. The folks in Cloudcroft and Mayhill have treated us great.

I've never killed an elk. I'd be so fixed on the first I'd never see the second.

    22-250 For Deer

I've taken a few deer with a .220 swift and all were with the old 60gr Solid Base. A couple were neck shots and several were shoulder hits. Longest shot was 250yds through the shoulder. All were DRT. I think a .22-250 is capable of cleanly taking deer at normal ranges as long as the rifleman...

    Daypack question

Look at the Nimrod Packs made in Washington. Their products started as fire fighting equipment but their hunting packs are top notch. They start with a basic belt and shoulder harness with numerous packs that attach to the harness. The basic pinnacle pack is what you seem to be looking for...

Best places to eat in NM

I've eaten at both Big Daddys and the Mayhill Cafe this past season. Mayhill Cafe got a face lift and the food is much better too. The breakfast menu was really good, especially if you like pancakes. There ain't nothing "short" in the short stack. I've eaten at Big Daddys for a number of...

    Archery Help for Son

LAST EDITED ON May-24-15 AT 06:26PM (MST)[p]There is more to follow through than holding up the bow arm. There is also follow through on the release arm. You've got to maintain the tension up to the point of release and then follow through. You can watch him shoot from behind and watch his...

    Rem 788 in 6mm

It seems that everyone I know that has a 788 has a 4x weaver on top. It was a very popular scope back then. Both were very inexpensive.

    Rem 788 in 6mm

One of the best grouping out of the box rifles I ever saw was a 788 in 6mm rem and with factory 100 corelocks to boot. I'd 600 was good place to start. Does it have a 4x weaver mounted?

    cleaning brass

I bought one of the Hornady sonic cleaners and it doesn't really clean the primer pocket. I use a q-tip to clean the residue out after the sonic cleaner then put them in my vibrating case cleaner with corn cob media.

    7mm Rem Mag

LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-15 AT 06:40PM (MST)[p]I too prefer H-1000 for my 160 accubond load. Its much more consistent in velocity and is much less sensitive to temperature. Plus I get very small one hole three shot groups with it from my Model 70. Of course its called H-1000 as it was designed...

    7mm Rem Mag

I've loaded up to 67grs of Reloder 22 without any problems with the 160 accubond and it chronos a little over 3100 fps. I'd be very careful going past that. Just remember that 22 is temperature sensitive and if you work up a really hot max load in the winter it may take a mallet to get the...

??? of the Day -- Do you reload or buy factory ammo

I load for nine different rifle calibers and three handgun calibers from .223 to .30-06. Recently most of my loading is for .220 swift,.270 and 7mm Rem Mag. I'm partial to Hodgdon powders and Nosler partition and accubond bullets. I've been reloading for 40 years.

    .257 Roberts Action Legnth?

The issue with the .257 Roberts is can you gain enough powder capacity by loading the bullet out to make any practical difference. And the answer is if you consider 100 fps or so significant then the answer is yes. The chamber in the long action Remington .257 Roberts has only slightly longer...

Who has any experiences with a 257 Roberts?

I have been shooting and reloading for the "Bob" since 1982. The .257 is enough gun for anything up to around 500 pounds at normal ranges. It will knock off coyotes as far as you could likely shoot. I whacked a javelina years back at over 600 yds using a 117gr Sierra BT. I am currently...

    1911 pistol

I personally have a Rock River and a S&W 1911. The old Rock River is a teriffic 1911 but pricey. S&W is a solid pistol except I don't like the fire pin block. The S&W pistol has been totally reliable with a variety of hand loads and factory and they are resonably priced Two of the patrolmen...

    When to Tumble

I decap with an universal decapper. Then I soak the brass in apple cider vinegar for several hours. Rinse with fresh water and you can use a q-tip to remove the remaining residue in the primer pocket. Let the case air dry overnight and then you can lube and resize. Wipe off the case lube and...

    .257 Roberts

As long as you got a good strong bolt action rifle the .257 Roberts can be pushed a little past the books loads. My load with the 115 Nosler Ballistic Tip is 49.0 grs of Reloder 22 in a winchester case. It gives a muzzle velocity of 3050 fps from my 24" Rem 700.

    257 roberts

A few years ago Remington chambered the 700 ADL synthetic for the "Bob" and some are still available new in the box. Also you can get a Model 7 Remington from the custom shop. Its not cheap but it looks oooo so good. Ruger still chambers the model 77 but many have a similar opinion that I...
