The Bookcliffs elk are in trouble. As someone who spent over 100 days on the unit hunting and or scouting this year alone. Over the past 25 years I have spent close to that many days on the unit each year as well. For several decades the DWR drew somewhere around 200 big bull tags each season...

If you have 17 points this year and the people who put in last year put in again and no other people in your point area were to put in, you have 13 applicants ahead of you for 10 tags and will have 12 with 17 this year. I know that is not realistic to say people won't change were they apply...

Let the DWR hear about the point creep and now allowing spike hunters to hunt all three seasons. Even if it only results in 5 more spikes to be harvested this year in the roadless, that is 5 more mature bull tags that can't be issued in 5-6 years.

There are more tags given on the Bookcliffs both North and South than the unit can sustain quality with. The quality has dropped over the last several years and if tag numbers continue, it will not get better. The age of the average buck harvested is not one of producing large bucks.

Pursuit/training has gone on for decades. Nothing new. You just happened to be there the same time some folks with hounds were.

I wouldn't go off the property boundary lines for anything other than a general reference. On lines I know have been surveyed, Google is off 20-30 in numerous areas in Utah.

I know Guymon's Metals in Cleveland Utah has done some. I've seen some pretty good sized ones in their parking lot in the past I think they did for the forest service to cross Huntington Creek. They looked nice.

It's paved to about 4 miles from the Uintah/Grand County line and about 6 miles from the north/south divide.

The hunt will TOTALLY depend on the weather as to where the deer are. Won't know until the week of the hunt.

Getting a bull over 300 is not a problem. You will have to watch for broker antlers as many will have busted by the late hunt. We've had good success on the late hunt.

I'm fond of Sam Raby (Animals in Motion Taxidermy) from Bluffdale, Utah for cats and bears. He's mounted both lifesize and rugs for me and several friends and does super.

You have to remember, this data comes from the same clowns that insist we have 18 bucks per 100 on most units!
