    Holy Cross Wilderness Buck

Based on where he saw it, I bet that buck never leaves unit 45.

    Almost the one

Good for you, Porkchop! I have been told over and over again, "you'll never shoot a big deer if you shoot a small one!" Having said that, I'd shoot him in a heartbeat...but I've killed a bunch of small ones.

The backdoor was wrong when I checked it...it showed me getting back the full fees, less the app fee.

    Dad's Hard Earned Deer

OK...I'll admit...I was Mr. Guillable #2. Or maybe I was the most guillable...we packed this one out just after I got back to the truck helping my friend with another several mile round trip pack out.

    Above Timberline Bucks Question

In general...regarding the bucks that live above timberline...how late in the season will they stay above timberline? In general, when do they tend to rub off their velvet? And after they lose the velvet, do they tend to drop down into the trees? When the archery hunters go after them, then...

    Cookie and Stinky?

You must have us mistaken for someone else! I don't think that's what my compadre had in mind...if it is, then it's time to find a new hunting partner. The keys weren't ours. Did you find them close to the water? Did one of you arrow an elk out there? Found the remains of the carcas and an...

    Cookie and Stinky?

Dear Cookie and Stinky, Thank you for the love note you left at our water stash. Unfortunately, our names are not Paul and Zack. My hunting partner was sure that there were two nympho women running around Lincoln National Forest named Cookie and Stinky that were going to come visit us during...

    Unit 34 Trail Cam Pics

Just thought I'd share a few pics I got on a trail camera between August and November in Unit 34...it was on a well used trail. I was pretty excited about these... After the fight, the victor took a little break... and look carefully...

    2nd Season Bucks...How High?

What elevations do you typically find the bucks during the 2nd season in the units with high country? Of course I know that they are where you find them, and that some will always be down low, and that it is very weather dependent...but I'm wondering specifically about above timberline bucks...

    Non-Res DIY Hunters

Yep...undersubscribed...my brain was hurting from work all day. And if you are right about the resident pool, it hurts that much more.

    Non-Res DIY Hunters

Here's my question that I can't find in the new regs...what happens to the 10% for guided tags in units that are under proscribed (where not all of the 10% are used up)? Do those extra tags go to Non-Guided NR, or do they now go to the resident pool?

Old Water Tanks in Unit 34

Thanks for the information, Carl. I'll definitely send him some locations. I am surprised there are enough operational guzzlers in the Sacramentos for an outfitter to map them out. Out of probably 25 of the big tanks I've seen, only two seemed to be working. And one is broken now.

    Loco Hills Supply Store Bucks

That's the scoop I'm looking for. Thanks for the info. Yeah, the guys in the store didn't seem too impressed with the bucks or my interest in them.

    Loco Hills Supply Store Bucks

I finally made it through Loco Hills the other day during normal business hours and went in the store. None of them are sandhill bucks...they are from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah (and maybe Wyoming). If you ever drive through Loco Hills, it is worth stopping to take a look at these...

Old Water Tanks in Unit 34

There are old water tanks scattered all over unit 34. I'm talking about big tanks...8 feet tall and probably 20 feet in diameter. You can see a lot of them in the satellite images. Some of them have water catchment systems (like a big funnel on top), and some appear to be supplied by pipes...

    Loco Hills Supply Store Bucks

Bump for the draw results crowd. FYI...these bucks are very small compared to the 2 hanging in the back of the store. If you ever pass through there, stop and take a look. My guess is that the bucks in the back of the store are not sandhill bucks...they look like mountain bucks to me with...

    Loco Hills Supply Store Bucks

LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-11 AT 10:27AM (MST)[p]Does anyone know what the story is behind the bucks in the Supply store in Loco Hills? I always pass through there after closing time on my way to the hills, and thought I'd ask. Here's a pic I took through the window, but the really big ones are on...

    Estimating Age of Bucks

The post about the age of trophy bucks got me to thinking...is there a good reference to estimate the age of mule deer bucks? I know the only way to determine the age for certain is to get a tooth tested, but I'm wondering about estimating. I know for whitetails, there is stuff all over the...

    Badlands Bino Case?

I had one and liked it until I tried the alaska guide creations bino case. The badlands case always felt a little bulky to me, but the Alaska guide creations case just disappears (even though it will also hold my rangefinder; camera and gps). I think it's because the AGC carries Lowe on my...

Spread to use for Estimating Elk Score

Last weekend, I found several nice elk sheds in NM, including my first matched set (6x6) and a lone 7 point. I've never scored an elk before, and have no idea what is a typical spread to use for estimating score. I know it depends on the size of the antlers, but what would you say is a good...

    Water in the backcountry

I'm with Don P...I always pack 4 liters/day for myself (hunting in southern NM). I usually drink 3 liters per day, which leaves an extra 1 liter for cooking. It may be a little much, but I've been stuck without it before...
