    Seriously?

I have to agree with Baltz526. I've eaten many whiteys and mule deer and have had some excellent mule deer, with two exceptions liked I described above.

    Seriously?

Almost all of my mule deer over the years have been good, especially early season, and I've only had 2 that were bad. Both were just after mid November, one in ID and one in MT, and were rutting hard and chasing does when I shot them. The one from MT (near White Sulphur) was a young forky but...

Unit 67 Second Season guide recommendation

Thanks to all who weighed in on my question, including those who sent PMs. I've gotten a better understanding of the unit and have decided to hunt it unguided. I'll report back in November, hopefully with a pic.

Great suggestions, thanks. I have been really busy but need to get cracking on this. John

How many points for G & H this year?

Interesting upward trend on the bad years. I wonder if that suggests ongoing degradation of habitat, and maybe not just winter range....Also more people, fences, cars, dogs.....

Living in or near Star Valley

I like Star Valley and live close by but in Idaho. Houses and land are significantly more expensive in WY vs east Idaho, but the hunting is significantly better in WY. East Idaho hunting is starting to get crowded. Lot of hunters in WY too but more game.

Unit 67 Second Season guide recommendation

I got lucky and drew a 67 Second season deer tag. I live in Idaho and at 60 there's a good chance I will say farewell to CO after this hunt, and so I'm thinking about breaking the piggy bank and going guided. I've talked to one outfit that operates in the unit, but would love to hear any...

    3rd Season 2020 Length

So is CWD not the stated, official reason for pushing the season dates back? I guess I was thinking it was a stated goal somewhere, but maybe I'm wrong on that. Destroying the older age classes to fix the point problem is cynical man, but my cynical side says there could be some truth to it...

    3rd Season 2020 Length

Yeah, but those later days are when the bucks are most vulnerable, so the shortening may not equal lower harvest, especially on mature bucks.

    Winter in Eastern Idaho

I'm in eastern Idaho near Swan Valley. Temps haven't been too bad and even though we've gotten a lot of snow over the past 3 weeks or so the darn winds have been so high that a lot of slopes have blown off pretty well and the snow isn't too deep there. Seen fewer deer here this winter than...

A couple of VA Muzzy bucks

Pretty bucks. I grew up in Va and have land in Page Co. but never seem to be able to make it back there during hunting season. Just curious roughly what part of VA you hunt? I use to hunt some of the bigger country west of the Shenandoah Valley. I've lived in eastern Idaho for about 15...

    grizzly attack

Those who make the argument that killing bears means they learn nothing about having a fear of people are discounting both the great intelligence of these bears and the ability of their noses to provide them with detailed information about what is happening in their world, which we can't really...

    A little help!

The same map, but originating on the east coast, would work just as well. People back there confuse Iowa and Idaho all the time too. Americans in general are terrible with geography.

    Anyone here have a Rokon?

Just to clarify I mean a whole deer that has been completed broken down and is in bags. Hauling a whole deer on a Rokon would be near to impossible I'd say - I'm sure someone will jump on and say they've done it, but it would be a stunt and wouldn't work on a rough steep trail.
  15. J

    Anyone here have a Rokon?

I had one for several years but sold it. If you need to access narrow trails that contour steep slopes, or climb single track trails on steep slopes that are rough, bouldery, etc it is the tool for the job, otherwise a 4 wheeler is a lot more practical. I found it very difficult to haul out say...

    SE Idaho Hunting Partner Wanted

You should probably make your post in the Idaho forum rather than General Hunting. There are some get after it younger hunters that live in Teton Valley nowdays, so I'm sure you'll meet some of them if you circulate around a bit. You could start by going to the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers...

    CO Unit 14 muzzy elk

Thanks for the thoughts and input guys, much appreciated. I did connect with Colorado Premier Outfitters who are located in the unit and they are willing to do an individual pack in and drop off, and just charge a daily rate per horse used. May go with them and will decide soon. I'll circle back...

    CO Unit 14 muzzy elk

Not looking for "under the table". Sorry if my post made it sound that way. I just don't want to pay as much as most drop camps cost as I'm one guy and have all my own equipment and have a lot of experience hunting all over. Maybe that's too small to fool with for the local permitted outfitters.

    CO Unit 14 muzzy elk

PS to my original post, my llamas may not be up for this so any information on someone who might pack me into that country would be appreciated. Especially if they would do a single individual who has their own gear, etc.(most outfitters want to do a larger group drop camp). Maybe a tall order...

    CO Unit 14 muzzy elk

Would like to talk to anyone familiar with this unit during the elk muzzy season. Before people freak out, I'm offering to exchange info on western WY or eastern ID deer/elk (I live right on the border of the two states and have hunted here for many years), or Frank Church Wilderness. I'm not...

    221-223 mid info

I drew this deer tag, but have never hunted or scouted the unit, or NV for that matter. Any advice would be much appreciated. I live on the Idaho-Wyoming border and will trade info on this area, also the Frank Church Wilderness for deer, elk, sheep. Thanks John

That would be much appreciated Ron. He hasn't started on my stock yet but said he was getting caught up.

Are OTC bull tags unit specific?

Thanks Tomichi. It's implied in the regs but for us very literal guys they need to come right out and say that you can hunt any of open the units during the OTC seasons, listing "valid units" still leaves the question open for me. Here in Idaho on the OTC general elk hunts you have to pick a...

Are OTC bull tags unit specific?

This is a dumb question I know but I haven't hunted elk in CO before and I can't seem to find the answer in the Reg book. If you buy an OTC second or third season bull license do you have to declare a unit when you buy the license and confine your hunting to that unit only, or is the license...

    Iron Sights

I realize this is an old thread and you may have pitched your gun in disgust, but in case you haven't there is a chance that your problem is simply a loose tang screw/s. I had this problem with my Lyman GP hunter and found that even if the screw was only slightly loose it sprayed bullets all...

My paper patched bullets in a Lyman Great Plains Hunter

Wow, that's pretty cool Ron. Gives me great hope for my LGPH, which I'm having re-stocked now (I sent you a PM update on hopefully the final chapter of my problems with my rifle). If you ever do another "class" on this subject I would happily make the trip over to your neck of Idaho to see how...

    Great Western Wyoming Taxidermist

Steve did a montana whitetail buck for me last year, which I was pleased with. His full body mounts of wolves, bear, etc., are really nice - I've seen them and I think he has some pics of them on his website. He's done a huge number of whitetails over the years, mostly from the midwest, but he...

    2 Zone Elk specifics

Does anyone know if there is anything specific out yet on how the proposed 2 zone system might work, which units would be involved, etc? I've looked at the F&G website and can't find anything. It doesn't seem to be in the new management plan, so I guess it is the next step, but people are...

    52/521 Deer 3rd Season Question

A buddy and I are planning to do a 3rd season deer hunt in CO in 2014, and two of the units we're considering are 52/521. I'm wondering whether on an average year most of the deer are typically down off the public land and onto private by 3rd season? I realize this will vary with weather year to...

    62 3rd season deer?

A buddy and I did that same hunt in 2010, and my report would be the same as yours exactly, to the point of being scary. We also couldn't get there until after 3rd had been going for a few days. I hunted just a little higher than you, and my buddy hunted higher yet, on NF. 2010 was still very...

    Unit 4 whitetails muzzy

I've never hunted northern Idaho but would like to try a whitetail hunt up there during the rut. I'm wondering if the fact that unit 4 is muzzy only for whitetail during the rut means a higher percentage of mature bucks than some of the other rifle rut whitetail hunts in north Idaho? Unit 4...

    Idaho falls

I bought a small business in IF in 2006, but I live about 45 minutes to the east in Swan Valley. Just to couch my perspective, I'm from the east coast but lived in northeast UT for several years in the 80s and have hunted and fished out here off and on since then, and finally moved back in 2004...

    Greys River Wy, Subdivision

Done, #786. What a horrible idea. That would totally change the character of the area. The Greys River valley and surrounding country is a very special place. Leave it alone, no development of any kind.

    Backpacking Region H

Just be aware that deer numbers in that country are very low as compared to most of the rest of Region H. The lower portion of that drainage is in Idaho, where there is a late hunt that runs to the end of November, with predictable results on older bucks. The 67 Idaho late hunt is a big source...
