NM 16D - 3rd Archery tag (Unit Wide)

If it doesn't work out with Dave, I would also be interested. I would be using the tag myself, not reselling...thanks, Bill 480 861 0603

    2012 Fall Draw Results

Thanks for the link! Got right in this time. Already knew we were 3/4 on deer tags and no sheep, just didn't know which 3 or which choices. Ended up with 1 archery and 2 rifle tags in 3A/C (2nd choices) so that's cool as our cabin is in that area.

F CC Apps! OMG End of July?

The problem isn't the online draw application process (I think most would say it's great), the problem is with the process of filling the tags and notifying the applicants. The answer is so obvious that many people mention it immediately - simply collect the entire fee up front! Take a week or...

+1m on Bull Basin...IMO, I would drive there from Phoenix rather than go to Archery HQ's (they are fine if $$$ is noooo object and mediocre service is ok with you)

    VW's 2012 Arizona Elkventures

Wow, what a long and frustrating wait?yesterday, the word on the street was that the results were finally available! But, that was just the beginning. Obviously, the phone lines were constantly busy, but you'd think the internet link would work right? Wrong! A lot has been written in blogs on...

AZ ELK & ANTELOPE CC HITS

Simple solution - just charge the whole fee up front! There would have to be a really quirky law that would allow that with a check and paper application, but not with a CC and on-line application. Bonus deal - it would likely cut way down on "superfluous" applications and increase the draw...

    VW's 2012 Arizona Elkventures

That turned out to be a false alarm yesterday - dang it! The draw section of the website came back on-line with some graphics changes, but no results. Maybe later today? While I impatiently wait, I will post a few pictures from last year?s hunt ? my quest for the big archery bull. As you can...

    VW's 2012 Arizona Elkventures

So why did I choose ?Elkventures? as part of my blog title? I think the reference to ?elk? and ?adventures? is obvious, but why pick elk when I already stated I was going to keep this year?s entries of a general nature? Well, AZ has gone back to on-line applications as an option after many...

    VW's 2012 Arizona Elkventures

It's 9:27am on Monday April 2, 2012 and I have decided to start this, my 3rd successive attempt to capture my hunting efforts in word and picture this year. I say attempt because my effort in 2011 was pitiful and left incomplete. In 2010, my entries captured everything that was important going...

    Point Creep

Just a guess, but it could be that (with extremely limited exceptions) if you don't use your points obtaining a tag, you don't hunt that species that year. In other words - no general tags available after the draw, no drawing on 2nd or 3rd choice without using BP's, etc. So, since most people...

    are bows that good

Here's the problem - there are no (or at least few) absolutes! The original post questioned a 120 & 130 yard shot. Fair enough, I think (almost) everyone would agree that's outrageous. But then someone chimes in with yeah, but 80 is ok (staring straight at you no less). Someone else says 50...

    3A /3C archery question

I'm a resident and hunted it last year during the archery hunt. Be happy to fill you in on details, but short story is it's a great hunt. Then again, there are several units that would fall in the same category.

    Life Time Licence?

Agreed...I've had one for years and it's paying off even as a resident. But now that non-residents have to purchase a license before putting in for the draw, it IS a no-brainer. 2 years of applying as a NR and you'll pay for the LT license. In case you didn't know, you will have to pay the NR...

100 vs. 150 grains of pellets?

Thanks for the replies...coinsidently, I went to Hornady's webpage and looked at their ballistic tables. They list ONLY 150 gr loads for both 250 and 300 gr bullets. They recommend 3" high at 100 yards which will put you about 3" low at 200. I wonder what those numbers would be for a 100 gr...

100 vs. 150 grains of pellets?

Buying a ML tomorrow (see previous post) and will be using pellets and a 300 gr Hornady sabot. Should I use 2 (100 gr) or 3 (150 gr) pellets? I have heard that accuracy suffers with the max load, but that's not making alot of sense to me. This will be for a (hopefully big) bull elk hunt.

    Buying a CVA Optima Tomorrow?

Ok, after reading some not so pleasant things about the Accura V2, I'm pretty locked in on the Optima. Have 2 questions. First - is there any major difference between te regular Optima and the Optima 209 Pro Magnum? Second - any reason I should not be buying an Optima?

Unit 15 Muzzy Help with a Twist

My son and I were fortunate to draw bull elk muzzy tags for unit 15 mid October hunt. We are looking for a little help, but not only the typical type. Of course if you have info on the unit, that would be much appreciated, but what we would especially like is someone who would let us park and...

AZ Archery Big Bull or Bust

Well, it's been some time since my initial post to the 2011 HAC and I believe it's time for an update. Though I promised to keep the blog more focused this year, I'm going to spend a little time bringing you up to date on the big picture stuff before getting down to detail. The second AZ draw...

OK, here we go...looks like I will be one of the first if not the best to post a 2011 HAC thread! For me, the hunts are...

    2011 Hunt Challenge

I participated last year and would love to chime in again in 2011. Last year, my main focus was to chronicle the whole season - something I have never done. In that, I was very successful though I didn't win any of the contest prizes. I see now that a lot of people didn't care for the side...

How Soon to Scout Bull Elk?

Thanks John and I agree that there's always more to learn about the area and I could have been doing that yesterday. Maybe a refinement of the question would be "for specific scouting, when will the bulls be in patterns typical of September and / or when will antler development be far enough...

How Soon to Scout Bull Elk?

Ok, so the hard part is done - I've drawn an archery tag for September. One of many next steps is scouting. I should have a fair amount of time (weekends) to invest from now to the hunt. My question is simply "when does it make sense to start scouting"? I have a good general knowledge of the...

I'm not real familiar with Marana or where Casper was found. I'm back at home in Gilbert now and headed down to Marana in a few minutes. Anyone can always call me at 480 861 0603. I will know more in a couple hours when I get down there.

    Lost Yellow Labs

Casper has been found! She got into it with something that took a bite out of her hind end, but the vet said it just needed cleaning and care not stitches. Also, there was a reported sighting of Cheyenne this morning. Odd that they were not together, but gives hope that we may still recover...

    2011 Antelope 16 Resident BP's

Thanks Don...I'm flying back tomorrow - not sure it will do any good, but going stir crazy here being unable to do anything at all. As for the antelope, I think we'll just stick with unit 10 at least for 2011. If she gets lucky and draws, I will likely be giving you a call :).

    Lost Yellow Labs

I hope I have that good fortune. I just burned about enough FF miles to get 2 normal RT tickets in order to get a last minute one way ticket for tomorrow. At least I'll be able to go to all the pounds between Phoenix and Tucson personally.

    An Average Guy?s Hunting Chronicle ? 2010

Hunt Review / Grading This is the last hunt of the year to recap and grade. This was the only tag of the year that went unfilled and yet it was still a successful hunt. It was time spent in the field watching and hopefully helping Kelly on her pursuit of a muley buck. We saw deer, including...

    2011 Antelope 16 Resident BP's

My wife, Kelly, has 16 bonus points going in to the 2011 draw. Kelly needs a rifle hunt and with the lengthy wait times, this may be her last chance at...

    2011 Elk 11 Resident BP's

So I have 11 bonus points heading into the 2011 draw and am wanting some input on the best application strategy. Some factors to consider - I'm ok with any weapon - can hunt archery, muzzy or rifle. I have a cabin in Heber so any unit near there would make scouting and even the hunt easier...

    An Average Guy?s Hunting Chronicle ? 2010

The Last Hurrah (Sunday, Oct. 31 Morning) The plan was similar to what we had been doing ? get up on the plateau and start still-hunting at first light. We were content to head home with an un-punched tag unless a decent buck showed itself and we also were only going to hunt a few hours since...
