    Colorado Unit 2 Elk Questions

Also forgot to mention you have to work through CJ Outfitting in order to access Walker's these days. Fortunately, that place had its "issues" sorted out.

    Colorado Unit 2 Elk Questions

I spend a ton of time in 2 and thanks to a very good friend, have had the opportunity to hold a number of tags and hunt it personally more times than most ever will - for elk, deer and pronghorn. Coloradoboy can vouch for that and yes, he knows the unit pretty well. Additionally, I go on a good...

    Kirt Darrner's Fishhook Strategy

Darner pioneered the "fish hook" method a little too successfully on monster mule deer at yard sales and rummage sales. Felonies and Boone and Crockett frauds aside, I believe he might have actually shot one half decent muley in his notorious career? If memory serves me right it's the only...

    Antelope 57

Congrats on the Tag, DanMan. I somehow managed to draw it as well as a NR with zero points this year (crazy, but I'll take it given I blanked on everything else in ever wester state). I'm actually based out of my hometown in Steamboat so plan on being out there a bunch looking for one of those...

    Hunting ISN'T Important

Science and religion and their countless purported contradictions do in fact have a common ground. If you’re game, dig in on one some of my former professor’s works. Google: Ian Barbour. Fascinating and educational reads. I’m an overly-educated and highly skeptical hunter who has a deeply...

    Time to get ready!!!

Congrats, buddy. I thought you were sick and tired of packing bulls across the flatlands in that unit for days on end! Going to be another season of too many miles in that stinking unit again, but well worth it. Bummed I can't make it this year... Please hold out for the big boy this year and...

    16E Making a run?

E is a tough but underrated unit. Definitely a pain to deal with accessing prime spots, but if you are willing to put some miles in on foot you can locate really good bulls in surprisingly sparse country. There are some great bulls in the unit, especially during archery. There is a reason hard...

    2014 Recap/Hunt Photos

Hope you all had a great 2014 season. I'd love to see some more hunting pictures, especially of your 2014 hunts. I went on a number of hunts in Colorado this past year after returning from a 10 year hiatus in New Mexico. Stupidly passed some very nice bulls on my muzzleloader elk hunt, missed a...

    How did your 2014 go?

I shot Bambi and then spent two days packing him out of steep canyon country. Hunted a lot in Colorado, but this was my only New Mexico hunt in 2014. -Cody http://themeateater.com/ http://www.firstlite.com/ www.streamflies.com

    Thanks NM

Sorry guys, the good old days of easy tags for nonresidents is over. It was great while it lasted, but now we have to put up with the same or similar draw odds handed out to nonresidents in many other states. Now that I'm a non-resident it really burns. In fact it burns to the point that out of...

    deer draw is up again!

It looks pretty reliable to me. My points are at zero and my wife, who went into the draw with zero and applied for an easy hunt to draw gained a point. Looks like the point creep made our unit a little more difficult to draw this year. -Cody http://themeateater.com/ www.streamflies.com
  29. nmelktrout

    draw question

My deer points were also showing zero prior to the "crash" however they are currently showing. I believe I drew the tag as I burned a few points on a tag that requires 0 to 1 to draw. I did draw a good speedgoat and muzzy bull tag. -Cody http://themeateater.com/ www.streamflies.com

Early or Late for Eastern Plains Deer?

Thanks for the insight, guys. I spent a day glassing and hiking one of the ranches and am pretty sold on where I'm going to hunt, now I just need to stay on it and locate a mature deer or two. No corn on this place, but there is good water, broken country, creek bottom and some dryland hay...

Early or Late for Eastern Plains Deer?

I just moved back home to Colorado after a 10 year stint in New Mexico and was wise enough to build a few preference points. I've got enough points to draw any season in the eastern plains, but was wondering if it is better to go early and get the first crack at some of these eastern plains...

    NM FREE-RANGE BISON HUNT (VIDEO)

Great video, Zac. Glad you got connected with my buddy Casey (a/k/a "werewolf"). Regarding the free range bison hunt question. Follow up on NM needs better Mule deer managment

The irony of the Gila is in the number of deer tags allotted per unit versus the number elk tags. Spend time glassing in any limited Gila unit and you will plenty of elk and hardly any deer. BUT, our deer biologists insist on issuing up to 10x the number of deer tags as elk tags in some of...

    Lobo/Dog Crossbreeding

So, there has been at least one confirmed incidence of New Mexico?s wonderful gray wolves cross-breeding with domestic dogs.
