    Pavant Mule Deer???

Thanks for the replies. It sure doesn't sound like much has changed in the last 21 years. It wasn't that good when I left but I still managed to usually find something to shoot. Hopefully my son will have some success.

    Pavant Mule Deer???

I learned to deer hunt in the Pavant unit over 30 years ago. I left Utah over 21 years ago and really haven't paid much attention to the hunting down there since. Well other than to notice some monster elk have come out of the state including the Pavant unit. Anyway, my oldest son now lives in...

    Donald Trump Jr.@ Expo

One thing that some folks are over looking is that Trump Jr. is definitely and "in" so to speak as a voice for hunters. None of the other candidates offer that on either side of the fence. Cruz claims he hunts, but it appears more for show than go, and he is not interested in protecting public...

    Utah.... Seriously!

I'm not saying I'm on Trammer's side or share his attitude in general, but if Utah does not clearly define what needs to be taken out of the field, then technically he is correct that every animal is illegal. The state I live in now clearly defines what has to be recovered from the field. It...

    Utah.... Seriously!

The only thing that list represents is those that were stupid enough to get caught. The majority of poachers per year do not get caught. I lived in southern Utah for quite a few years and poaching is virtually part of the culture in that part of the state. It's a wonder any deer reach trophy...

Anyone Know About This Big Buck?

Thank you for replying to this post. It is a great buck and I agree with some of the others that perhaps you are a little shy on your measurements. You might want to get him officially scored. He is a typical buck of a lifetime.

Anyone Know About This Big Buck?

Does anyone know about this buck? Like what state it was killed in or when? I had it texted to me, but there was no other information other than they thought it was possibly killed in Montana.

My Favorite 4th of July Photo

I took this photograph a few years ago in Helena Montana. It was a completely random moment, but I really like how it turned out. I call it my 4th of July photograph. So here's to wishing everyone a happy and safe 4th of July.

    Vortex Rifle Scopes

If you stick with the Viper line and up you'll be fine. I own a Viper and have really put it through a lot. It is holding up fine. However I have heard of problems with the cheaper scopes they make. Like most things optics related, you get what you pay for. I would put the Viper's on par with...

    Enough is Enough

I know exactly how Dogwood feels about Utah. I didn't quit hunting, I moved. I'd had it with Utah, it is a seriously screwed up state when it comes to hunting. I have been gone for 18 years and haven't missed it once or had any desire to go back. The difference in the quality of hunting I have...

    Carter's

I normally stay out of these petty type conversations, but I really can't stand it when a bunch of jealous types start whining and crying about those that rise above their level of success. I personally know Garth and have known him for a long time, as in waaaaaaaay before he started the Hunting...

You might want to check the Montana FWP website, there are still deer hunts going. Some clear into the middle of next month.

    photo shopped ?

It's not photoshopped. The guy in the photo is Jim Hackiewics and he's a friend and hunting partner of mine. The lion was called in and killed in Washington state by a client of his. Jim isn't exactly a huge guy so it makes the lion look bigger than it is, although it is a very good lion. It's...

    best day

That is one of the prettiest, biggest, and well fur bobcats I've ever seen anyone post. Might be a long time before you top that kitty. If he were mine he would be at Phil Soucey's taxidermy in Libby Montana right now!

    Huskema

Stinkystomper, I could never like the turrets on the Black Diamond. They just didn't feel as decisive as the Mark IV or the NXS. Plus if memory serves correctly aren't they 1/8" adjustments instead of 1/4"? The glass was good though.

    Expensive Gun or Scope ?

Completesportsman, a Remington VLS in .308 or a Weatherby Vanguard SUB MOA in .308 will get you there cheaper than a Sendero and you'll have more money to put towards that quality glass.

    Nightforce VS. Huskemaw

Stinkystomper, we are on the same page as far as NXS scopes go. Betcha that Huskemama would go belly up in less than hundred rounds out of your .50.

    Best bang for Buck Rifle

For the money, the Stevens 200 is the best of the cheap rifles, and the best bang for your buck. If you want to spend a little more the Tikka's and CZ rifles are exceptionally nice rifes for the money.

    Expensive Gun or Scope ?

No question about it, the money should go towards the scope, rings, and mount. There are a lot of cheap rifles that shoot well, but their potential will never be realized with some of the cheap optics that are out there.

    Nightforce VS. Huskemaw

LAST EDITED ON Nov-11-08 AT 09:38AM (MST)[p]Well lets put this in perspective. The US military uses a lot of Nightforce scopes. They are about the toughest scope built. They are literally built like a tank when compared to other scopes. Their optics are fantastic and they have very reliable...

    Nightforce VS. Huskemaw

Nightforce, time tested and proven. It also has top quality components. Huskemaw, new scope, not proven, cheaper parts. It's a no brainer as far as I'm concerned.

    Your preferred BULLET

Hornady Interbond. I like it better than Partitions or Barnes X. Haven't tried Accubonds as I'm so satisfied with the Interbonds I can see no reason to try Accubonds. The Interbonds are killer on deer and antelope too.

NE Montana ideas for buck hunting??

Find river breaks/bad lands type terrain and you'll find mule deer. It's about that simple. If there's water, cultivated fields of grain or alfalfa near rough breaks country you will find mule deer. Where in northeast Montana are you looking to relocate?

ForkWest, I can see how you would think what you do, but until you posted that link I had never seen that thread before. Like I said I don't post here all that often, which also means I don't hang out here all that often either. Has something to do with people that find so many things funny...

    Next Never Enough Big Game

Wizard, I agree with you 100% it is brutal. I didn't write it, but if one looks past all the flowery writing and focuses on the legitimate gripes the writer stated such as the following facts: 1. Vortex optics were not compared to any optics that would be considered industry standards by any...

ForkWest, that's real cute, name calling. Didn't they teach you last year in 2nd grade that it's not nice to call people names. Just out of curiousity what do you mean I've tried to do this before? Considering I rarely post here you're talking awful loud and proud.

    Next Never Enough Big Game

So far three comments from people that haven't seen the "glassing video" but all three have opions about the critique. Not much validity there, is there? Don't take that statement personal, just stating fact. If you'll read my original post I said I like the Never Enough hunting videos. I'll...

Prism, First off, let me say I have enjoyed all the Never Enough hunting videos I have watched. However that glassing video left a lot to be desired. Now I did not write this review below. I found it on another site, but I would say for the most part I agree with most of what is said. It's a...

    foxpro zr2

They work great and have plenty of volume. Here's a little proof from a couple weeks ago. Oh and by the way we only set up four times and called in yotes on 3 of the 4 set ups. A total of 4 coyotes responded to the call. The ZR2 works great!

    Skull bleaching question

Overkill, here is what you have to do. First the skull isn't quite clean enough (obviously). Soak it for another week or two. If you can keep the water warm by using an aquarium heater (Walmart approx. $24.00) it will work even better. You need bacteria to form and eat the remaining flesh...

deserteagle500, Your little rant is about as dumb as anything I have ever read on MM and that's really saying something all things considered. What are you 15 to 16 years old? There is no way that you have ever personally hunted whitetail on public or you wouldn't make so many absolutely...

    antlerless hunts

RELH is right on the money. I just don't understand why such a simple concept is so misunderstood by so many hunters. A piece of ground can only support so many deer regardless of whether they are male or female. I'd rather open up some room for more bucks to survive on that land than does...
