    Missouri Breaks, MT

The roads are definitely impassable when wet - it's not an exaggeration, just don't try it. There won't be gravel roads where you are likely to hunt. Many are pretty unpleasant when dry, so you don't want to head down a road in the middle of the breaks with your trailer if you haven't driven...

    Living in MT

My wife and I are a year away from being empty nesters and plan to fulfill a lifelong dream of moving out west (currently live in VA). We have been out west many times, but never to MT. It is such a large and diverse state, it is difficult to even try and narrow down to general areas to look...

    Best week to hunt sntelope

One lesson I learned the hard way is that you need to pay attention to when deer season is in your unit. That will bring some number of guys doing combos and just a whole lot of yahoo's driving on 2 tracks looking for deer.

    Wall tent question

I am going to buy a wall tent with a sewn in floor. I know most people hate that set up but I live in the South and need it to be snake proof and bug proof to use it at home. My question is on the frame. I have read that it is possible to use an internal frame with a sewn in floor if you get...

    Elk NR 4 pts

I would burn them on a general tag. The problem with WY is that there really are no in between units. Tags are either relatively easy to draw or take max points and everyone else will never catch up. My research has resulted in all of the in between units having no real feasible public access.

    66 archery elk

Looks like I drew 66 and am planning on hunting third week. Would love to hear from someone who hunted it in the last couple years to get a feel for how much pressure to expect and which areas/trail heads saw the most pressure. I assume muzzle loader pressure is not an issue given that there...

HB0112 Big Game & Trophy Licenses

I would have a lot easier time swallowing a 10% tag allocation if Non-residents contributed 10% to the G&F budget (or even 20% for that matter). Aside from losing license revenue and tourism dollars from fewer non-resident hunters, I think they will see a big drop in PP fees. PP's work great...

    Planning for 2014 already

WY has very little between easy to draw units and max point units. Most the ones in between are going to have access issues. The reality is that you will never catch up to draw one of the quality units with good access. If you don't intend to drop big bucks on access, there's no reason to...

    NR experience drawing deer tags

I understand that the way the draw works (with 5 choices), there's no way to figure out draw odds. I am looking at applying for archery hunts where the odds are listed between 3 to 1 and 7 to 1, and using all 5 choices. Wondering how often people who have done similar have actually been able...

    Area 16 Cow Elk

My 13 year old daughter drew a 16 Cow tag. We are going to be hunting mid-October. I am a very inexperienced elk hunter, so would appreciate any and all advice about where and how to hunt them. Where are the elk are likely to be in terms of elevation and terrain that time of year? Thanks

    Antelope Hunt Dates

Whiterock, Yes we have 3 points. Should be able to draw but you never know if they cut a bunch of tags (which it sounds like they probably should do). I know numbers are way down, but my son is a senior so this is probably the last year we will be able to go as a family because once he is in...

    Antelope Hunt Dates

Taking the wife and 2 kids on an antelope hunt to 47 this year. If the season dates are the same as the past, the type 1 season will come in on a Weds (9/25) and the type 2 season will come in on a Sat on 10/5. My wife and daughter aren't going to have great stalking skills and really need a...

What happens in the Elk draw if there is only 1 non-resident tag available. Does it go to the person with the most points or go to the draw?

Freezing Meat w/ ice and rock salt

The situation is that I fly out for a week of antelope hunting. I need to get it vacuum sealed and frozen to fly home. Don't like spending money on the processing and don't like the time driving back and forth to the processor. Last time I used dry ice but it cost me about $70 for the week.

Freezing Meat w/ ice and rock salt

Just wondering if anyone has actually tried this. Not talking about keeping it frozen, but processing it myself and then using it to freeze the meat. Looking for a cheaper alternative to dry ice. Thanks

    Grand Mesa Archery Question

Looking for an archery hunt to take my 15 year old son on. Looking for high numbers of deer and elk, don't care about trophy quality - a rag horn or small 3x3 or 4x4 would be perfect. Will be hunting on foot and don't mind walking or spiking out, but don't want killer terrain. I am focused on...

    Unit 80 Antelope

I've hunted around Douglas and Medicine bow before and thinking about putting in for 80 this year. Main reason is the Sep 1 opening so I can take my son without having him miss school. I know there are less Antelope in this part of the state, but how many would we see per day? What is...

How far will your scent bother elk?

Newbie question: How far away do you have to be from elk where you don't have to worry about your scent bothering them (or at least not blow them out)? I plan on glassing from a high point at the head of several drainages and expect thermals to be pushing my scent down. Will this only affect...

    Bear precautions

I'm heading to my first backpacking elk hunt in CO this year and just wonder what kind of bear precautions you guys take in terms of keeping them from tearing up your gear and camp. Do you cook away from camp, hang your food, what do you do with trash? Thanks

    Fishing Question

Which Archery Unit for a kid

I live in VA and would love to bring my 14 year old son out west for his first archery hunt. Would be focused on doing a backpack type hunt. Don't care at all about trophy quality, more focused on seeing lots of deer and having multiple opportunities at average bucks would be great! Ideal...

    Basic tripod questions

I am in the process of buying my first spotting scope. My basic question is how important is the tripod? My 2 concerns are weight and cost. I don't need the best, but don't want to spend $1200 on a scope and not get full advantage of the quality because of the tripod. Also, in the spirit of...

    Area 63 Archery Deer

Planning a hunt for next year with my 13 year old son, we will have 2 points. Trying to find an area that I can hunt every year - concentrate on OTC elk when I can't draw deer. Not concerned about trophy quality, just lots of opportunity. Archery Deer harvest stats look really good for 63...

    flatlanders and altitude

I basically live at sea level. I have been out west a couple of times at modest elevations (7500 ft) and have had some issues (headache, naseau, loss of appetite) that lasted several days. I am considering a wilderness archery elk hunt in CO. Most seem to be at very high altitudes - above...

    Area 47 Elk

I am hunting 75 for antelope nexy year and was thinking about picking up a cow tag for my 14 year old son for 47. Just looking for some general info about what part of the unit the elk inhabit and what the access is like there. Basically, is it worth picking up the tag? Thanks

    Trespass fees

Looking at doing an archery deer hunt with my 14 year old son. Not partial to any area, but been researching somewhere in the NW corner. Don't care about trophy quality, just looking for high opportunity. I've been looking all over the web and all the trespass hunts I come accross range from...

Draw question 1st and 2nd choice

    Confused by bonus point reports

As states transition from making most of their money off of the license fees to making it off of the point fees, I really wish they would lower the tag fees. I would much rather pay $50 for a point and have the tags cost 1/2 of what they do today, so I don't have to take a home equity loan out...

    Confused by bonus point reports

I was looking at the 2008 and 2009 bonus point reports for LE deer. They don't seem to make sense. In 2009, both the people purchasing points and applying for licenses seemed to double. The difference seemed to be in the 0 point category. Can that be right or are they somehow counting differently?

    Elk 37 and Rut

I hunted the unit a couple of years ago the 3rd week of Sept and the action was not great - just a little bugling very early in the morning. I know this goes against conventional wisdom, but I met up with a serious elk hunting local and he seemed to think the week after labor days was by far...

Help picking unit for father/ son archery hunt

I am planning my first DIY archery hunt next year with my 14 year old son. We will be hunting the first week of the season to accomodate his school schedule. I recognize that is a tough time to hunt elk so want an area that has a good deer population. We're much more interested in quanity...
