    Montana Moose 105 near Libby

Hi Tony, I drew a n.r. for the same unit in 2015. I just sent you a detailed letter by e-mail so please watch for it in case it gets flagged and tossed in your junk mail. Ken

    Best Rifle for Daughter

Weatherby recently came out with a reasonably priced rifle designed for women - the Camilla in the Vanguard series. Stocked in short action calibers, but 6.5 Creedmor, 7mm-08 or .308 with a stout bullet are sufficient for elk at reasonable distances.

    Randy Ulmer with another monster....

Randy Ulmer is without a doubt one of the very best hunters and archers living today. If you need to question very average "pro's", go after guys like Cameron Hanes.

    Another Triple _BB Gem!

Like most guys I read far more than I ever comment, but I have to say that after many years of reading Triple Big Baby's incredibly self centered posts, that any grief he gets from others is well earned. Anyone that has so little respect for others as to brag about turning n.r's in for hunting...

    Lost my hunting partner!

Very sorry for your loss. It's horrible to go through. We also just lost our drahthaar, to cancer, at only 4 years of age two months ago. She was finished out nice, a true athlete, had the best nose of even our best past drahthaars, and was a clown that had you laughing constantly. Not to...

    Mountain Lion Encounter

Yes - it's fun and exciting. Like some of you I had it happen also, mine on a spring bear hunt. While sitting down and glassing a basin near evening he came up behind me. I did not hear him but guess I sensed something staring at me. Turned around and he was 20 feet away. Upon eye contact he...

    Swaroski SLC Repair Q??????

Manny, I had the exact same great experience as bucklover did with Swarovski on a pair of SLC's I sent in just last year. I think the turn around was about a month if I remember correctly. Superb customer service and my binos are like new again.

    Do you log your hunts?

Like probably many of you, I have found the past reads of hunting trips to be invaluable. This is just to encourage those that maybe do not do it to consider it. Reading back over hunts that happened long ago brings back details a person will never retain, but best of all, it puts you right...

    Grizz in Region H??????

I agree with the above posts. I was told by a government trapper several years ago that it was Blind Bull drainage after it had been marauding sheep on complaints from the Basque herders. I personally also lost a front quarter of a moose in 2002 to a grizzly on the north end of H not far from...

    280 140gr bst for elk

All good info above. I have the same ultralight .280 rifle you mention and have shot a lot of elk with it, mostly with full throttle handloads in 160 Nosler Partition and Barnes bullets, but recently have been using handloaded 140 Accubonds. I value every ounce of meat so all I ever take are rib...

dltcs, So, according to your post she wants to marry you for who you are, not for what you have or have access to, and her Dad sincerely likes you also. Utah N.R. App Tip/Reminder

BigBuckKiller - yes, as the other guys have said, you will still get a point. At least I always have. MuskegMan - No, not in reference to the resort. It is instead referring to my love of being alone in very lonely places, which you know well in Alaska. A great place.

    Wyoming Moose Unit 24

LAST EDITED ON Feb-02-10 AT 05:58AM (MST)[p]I echo what mulecreek said about 10 compared to 24. Have spent a good amount of time in 10 after deer and elk, but have only observed moose. I did hunt 24 for moose in 2002 but my info might be dated. What everyone has stated is accurate from my...

    Utah N.R. App Tip/Reminder

With the application process opening I believe on Monday, just wanted to remind everyone that since the inception of the required $65 hunting license purchase to apply for tags, that your license is good for 365 days/one year. So in other words, if you applied for a tag last year on 2/20/09...

LAST EDITED ON Jan-28-10 AT 06:47AM (MST)[p]Anyone that could vote on that law to pass is as corrupt as the law itself and lacking any ethics and decency. I agree, boycott the outfitters and/or the state. When you receive mailings from the outfitters just write "return to sender" across the...

Bird dogs, desert quail, and snakes

Thank you for the reply Shummy. I spoke with three different vets in southern New Mexico yesterday and they all said the same thing - yes, they do vaccinate dogs with the snake vaccine but it is only used as an added precaution that should help the dog to deal with the venom better. A person...

Bird dogs, desert quail, and snakes

Each year I leave the frozen north with my drahthaar for a week or two on the beach - the sands of SW New Mexico or SE Arizona to hunt desert quail. Always having hunted the end of Jan or first week of Feb I have yet to see a snake, but talking with the C.O. last week he said it could happen on...

    favorite caliber

Also a lightweight .280. Used 7mm mag. for many years and it was excellent. If you hunt rough country out of a backpack though, the weight savings of a lightweight .280 over a magnum action makes a difference, and handloaded it will come very close to FACTORY 7mm mag. loads. If you can afford...

Thanks patience. My fault, I should not have got on you and took it too seriously. Kids use this site and I just didn't see who would ever want to listen to that kind of trash, being the guy was just a profane, worthless, and wasted complete fool. But I was wrong. One_dryboot has a deep...

LAST EDITED ON Nov-25-09 AT 08:51AM (MST)[p]The guy said it best at the end of the article..... Game and fish departments will not be able to manage ANY game until the wolves are managed. The politics of the wolf debacle are offensive and ignorant, and hunters are paying the bills for all of...

    A new holiday comming soon

I support the new PETA holiday also. Big game is over for me this year but calling coyotes are a winter ballistic tip pleasure. It will also make my tormented Drahthaar happy when the speedy jackrabbits roll to a stop from an even speedier load of nickel plated 7's while hunting scalies and...

    Packing out an elk?

    >ANYONE who hunts elk alone, has >never gutted, skinned, and packed >out an elk before. You >might take out a cape >and some backstrap, but then >there will be the other >4 trips. Dumb. Nickman you are an ignorant joke and are obviously trying to mix it up. For you to say that ANYONE who...

    Packing out an elk?

A couple of other thoughts - a small 3" or so knife blade with a drop point type is all you need for the skinning, a scalpel to do the tight areas if caping, and a FILET knife works much better than a thicker blade for the actual meat removal, especially when working around the bones. Heavy pack...

    Packing out an elk?

All of these last several posts are great advice. Just be in shape, and it's really not that big of a deal to do it all completely alone. Mtnman said it - have all you need with you to do it right away at the kill and get right to work. Skin one whole side, de-bone it and put in heavy cotton...

ICM deer speaks the truth. My experiences that also date back reflect the same conclusion. It's still walking on a great history and sadly no longer lives up to its reputation. Grey's river

If you're talking rifle and mule deer, 20 years ago you could actually hunt it, have fun, and have a good chance at a solid deer. I have not hunted it in 5 years now, but my personal opinion is it's been messed up with too much press and false hopes of the good old days. Twenty or thirty trucks...
