Got a 2nd rifle deer hunt next week and the moon will be the biggest supermoon in 70 years. Gonna be a tough hunt for sure.

Does anyone know if you can access the Southern end of the Mimbres range through the Berenda Ranch/Macho Canyon road or is that road blocked by landowners? I hunted some private land in that area 25 years ago and was hoping to go for a hike up in the National Forest there this Spring.

My daughter and I stayed at the Pinon Pines hunting cabins near Datil on our elk hunt. Nothing fancy, but clean with heat, a kitchen and a hot shower. Decent price too--$55 per night. It's in pretty easy range of units 16D, 16E, 15, 13 and probably the north part of 17.

Leaving Saturday for my daughter's 16D youth cow hunt. It will be our last hunting/fishing trip together before she goes off to college. Looks like snowy weather is in store. Maybe it will push-em around a little. Here's hoping for success!

Just got back from a pre-season deer scouting trip in Unit 24. No doubt the drought took a heavy toll. Found a few areas to hunt, but there just aren't that many deer around. It will still be a blast though and much better than not hunting!

Unit 24 offers 20 elk tags this year--5 of which are for youth on Ft. Bayard. There must not be many elk in the unit, but the Mimbres looks like it ought to have a decent number. Anyone seen any there? Just curious. I have a deer tag for 24 this year and it would be cool seem some elk.

While driving back from a Red River fly fishing trip, I saw a herd of elk right where I-25 crosses the Rio Grande just downstream from Caballo. They were in a field next to the rocket ship models anyone who has driven by there has noticed.

Any word on partial containment? Praying for the firefighters and the residents. Their issues are far greater than mine. That being said, I might need to scout a different area for deer season. My primary hunting area is aflame.

I drew first rifle Unit 24 mulies. Not too shabby for a non-guided NR. It's great because I get to take one daughter on a scouting trip probably in October and another on the hunting trip with me!

My eldest daughter and I both drew rifle deer tags for Unit 24. Hers is the youth hunt. This will be her first time being the hunter rather than the "guide." Very excited.
